Trials Supplementary Regulations

Last updated 1/12/24

These events are run as Clubman Events and are therefore confined to members of the Isle of Man Four Wheel Drive Club Limited and by invitation a limited number of members from other clubs. All Entrants, Drivers, Navigators and other passengers must ‘sign-on’ and produce the necessary documents to prove their eligibility for the event, whether this be by means of an approved Club Membership Card and/or a Motorsport UK RS Competition Licence.

These events are classified as Cross-Country Vehicle Trials where the scoring is based on a competitor’s ability to traverse difficult terrain through sets of gates to gain points.

Sections are made up of eleven sets of gates with the intention of becoming increasingly more difficult to navigate the further that you progress through the section. The number of gates that are navigated, signifies the number of points that are gained. Any competitor who completes a section is awarded 0 points and the competitor with the lowest number of points at the end of the event is declared the winner. Should a competitor only make it past the first gate then they will gain a score of 10.

Points are determined by the number of gates that are successfully navigated; should a competitor cease to make forward progress or contact a gate, then points are awarded for the number of gates they have successfully navigated. It is deemed that a gate has been successfully navigated if the centre of either front hub has passed the line of a gate, and the competitor gains that score until successfully navigating the next gate. Note: These are non-stop events and forward progress must be made at all times.

In the event of multiple competitors finishing the event with an equal number of points, then the first competitor who has scored lower than the other during the sections will be declared the winner.

There are three classes that are stipulated: Short Wheelbase, Medium Wheelbase and Long Wheelbase.

  • Short Wheelbase – 50 inches to 89.9 inches
  • Medium Wheelbase – 90 inches to 99.9 inches
  • Long Wheelbase – 100 inches plus

Any competitor competing in a long wheelbase vehicle is entitled to a maximum of one reverse in each section. Where the reverse is to be taken must be declared by the competitor before they begin the section. Should a long wheelbase vehicle successfully navigate through a gate and then take their reverse they may not reverse beyond the gate that had previously been successfully navigated with the centre of either front hub.
